Local business and shop owners have praised the 30 Minutes Free Parking policy from the Conservative led borough council.
Last December the council introduced 30 Minutes Free Parking to roads in different areas of the borough. Surbiton
benefitted heavily, with 30 Minutes Free Parking signs appearing on more roads there than anywhere else.
Small business and shop owners have been quick to show support for the policy, placing stickers and posters in their
windows in areas across the borough.
The Conservatives made the pledge to deliver 30 Minutes Free Parking in their manifesto, along with four other main
promises. These were an extra 1million pounds to improve roads, more police on patrol, improved care services and two more schools. With 30 Minutes Free Parking the Conservatives have delivered on all five pledges.
Paul Dawson, who runs the shop Shoe Repairs and Key Cutting said “I think it's a really good idea. It's ideal for my business as it allows people to come and go without worrying about parking tickets.''
Paul Jennings from the Surbiton based shop The Bed Post said:“It's a very good idea that benefits us. As soon as
people become a bit more aware of it I'm sure it will be great for local businesses.''
Thar Chughtai (pictured) from Awan Heating, Plumbing & Bathrooms Specialists said: “As a local plumber and bathrooms merchant we are glad to have free parking for our customers. Our local trade and customers are very happy for the free parking as 95% of our customers prefer to shop locally. It’s good news for all of us.”
Council Leader Kevin Davis said: “Since we first introduced the plan for 30 Minutes Free Parking local businesses have been showing their support. Shops and small businesses have been putting up posters and stickers in their front windows to show that they wanted 30 Minutes Free Parking.
“Now that it’s been introduced, local businesses are feeling the benefits of 30 Minutes Free Parking.”
